Douglas A. Alderton, age 79, died peacefully on December 26, 2024, while in palliative care with Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born on March 7, 1945, in Baraboo, WI to George and Winifred (Butler) Alderton. Doug attended schools in Rhinelander and graduated from RHS in 1963.

On April 2, 1964, Doug enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on October 13, 1967. On October 25, 1969, he married Katherine Moore. They were married until 1993 and raised three children together in Rhinelander.

Doug attended technical school provided by the Air Force and held positions with Rhinelander Airport and Frito Lay. He then worked for the Rhinelander Paper Company for more than 20 years, retired and moved to Merrill, WI.

On August 9, 1996, Doug married Cheryl Hass-Runge in Merrill, WI and they enjoyed 26 years of marriage before Cheryl passed away in September of 2022.

Doug, or “Bypass” to some, was a life-long learner and enjoyed many hobbies including HAM radios, old tractors, motorcycles, target shooting and playing the banjo. Doug looked for ways to give to his community and was passionate about supporting and fundraising for veterans. Additionally, in his 43 years of sobriety, he provided counsel and support to many individuals on their journeys to recovery.

In recent years, Doug enjoyed bragging about his grandchildren and solving world problems with his “McDonalds Crew.” He treasured this coffee klatch who provided endless enjoyment and support before and during his cancer treatment.

Doug is survived by his three children, Donna Alderton of Seattle, Tara (Darrin Gremban) Alderton of Rhinelander with their children Greyson and Grant Gremban, and Douglas Alderton Jr. of Rhinelander with his children Alexis and Vallyn Alderton; stepdaughter, Sarah (Jeremy) Lee and their children Sasha, Anton and Ivan; as well as many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, George ‘Pat’ Petranek; his sister, Janet Milbrath; his brother, Jim Alderton; and his wife, Cheryl Alderton.

In accordance with Doug’s wishes, the family will hold private burial services at a later date. Mar-Lin VFW Post 10203 will provide graveside military rites.

The family wishes to share their heartfelt thanks to the Aspirus Wausau cancer and palliative care teams and to Pastor Joel Danner of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and the “Sunshine Crew” (especially Sue and Paul Puhl) for all their care and support.

Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral & Cremation, Merrill, is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at www.taylorstinewaid.com
