VerJean M. Schmidt

VerJean M. Schmidt, 76, of Merrill, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. 

VerJean was born January 23, 1949, in Merrill, daughter of Lawrence and Carmelita (Ament) Kleinschmidt, Sr. She married the love of her life, Dennis Schmidt, on April 26, 1969. He preceded her in death on January 26, 2024. After graduating from high school, VerJean did in-home childcare. She eventually took a position as a cashier at Carl’s Foodlane. As time went on, VerJean also worked as cashier at Drew’s Piggly Wiggly and Dave’s County Market. She truly loved her job and looked forward to seeing the customers every time she was at work. VerJean retired from Dave’s County Market in November of 2023.

VerJean enjoyed fishing and boating, camping, and sitting by the campfire. She loved watching the hummingbirds at the feeders and also feeding other birds. She also enjoyed watching movies and tv shows, and listening to country music, especially her favorite, Alan Jackson. Most of all, VerJean loved her husband and family and enjoyed spending time with them. She also loved her dog, Charlie.

Survivors include her son, Jeremy (Rick Palmerton) Schmidt of Wausau; grandchildren, Ashley (Ben) Jozwiak of Wausau and Madisen Palmerton of Wausau; great-grandson, Jayden; brother, Jim (Char) Kleinschmidt of Lake Tomahawk; sisters-in-law, Marie Kleinschmidt of Merrill, Dawn Kleinschmidt of Merrill, Polly Malik of Capitola, CA, Patty (Jeff) Reynolds of Tony, WI, Brenda Schmidt of Owatonna, MN, and Michelle Schmidt (Dave DeHart) of Merrill; brothers-in-law, Mike (Sue) Schmidt of New Auburn, WI, Gerald (Linda) Schmidt of Michigan City, IN, Randy (Peggie) Schmidt of Elk Mound, WI, Tom (Sally) Schmidt of Merrill, Dick (Roxann) Schmidt of Wausau, and Kevin (Lisa) Schmidt of Merrill; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

VerJean was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Schmidt; parents, Lawrence and Carmelita Kleinschmidt Sr.; brothers, Lawrence Kleinschmidt and Ronald Kleinschmidt; sister-in-law, Karen Schmidt; and brothers-in-law, Stephen Schmidt and Jody Malik.

The funeral service for VerJean will be held at 12:00 P.M., Noon, Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral & Cremation at 903 E. Third St., Merrill. Lay Pastor Don Everhard will officiate. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M., Saturday, February 15, 2025 at the funeral home. Inurnment at Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery will take place at a later date.
